The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is not some untouchable beast of entertainment immune to mishaps and human failures. Sh*t happens and sometimes that sh*t happens on a large scale around the size of a six-story building.

Winter weather is relatively unpredictable, crosswinds are notoriously stronger than planned – especially in Times Square – and those pesky buildings are just lying in wait to attack.

The latest incident took place In 2008 with Keith Haring’s Figure with Heart. Wayward winds sent the iconic figure into the NBC booth interrupting the broadcast.

Hosts Al Roker, Meredith Vieira, and Matt Lauer were largely silent as viewers heard snippets of their voices. Moments later, Lauer explained the incident, with Vieira motioning to where it hit their booth. No one was injured.

In 1986, a Raggedy Ann balloon crashed into a lamppost and sent a lamp into the street. The same year, a Superman balloon had its hand torn off by a tree. Neither incident caused any injuries.

In 2005, the M&M’s chocolate candies balloon caught on a streetlight in Times Square. Two sisters were struck by falling debris, suffering minor injuries.

In 1994, the Barney balloon tore its side on a lamppost, but no one was injured.

Handlers lost control of The Cat in the Hat and it careened into a lamppost, causing the metal arm to fall off and fracturing the skull of 33-year-old Kathleen Caronna.

Caronna spent nearly a month in a coma and recovered just in time to sue Macy’s and the city for $395 million.

In 1957 the first rain-incident occurred when Popeye the Sailor balloon’s hat filled with rain water during a storm, which caused the balloon to get off-course and pour water on the crowd.

Heavy rain filled the brim of Donald Duck’s hat in 1962, causing the character to tip over and dump 50 gallons of water on unamused onlookers.

in 1956 Mighty Mouse escaped from its handlers and blew against a street sign, he failed to save the day and collapsed instead.

Sonic the Hedgehog broke an off-duty policeman’s shoulder in 1993 when the balloon crashed into a lamppost at Columbus Circle.

    But, all was not lost in any case. And the handlers did their best to prevent any mishaps.
